One of our church's core values is spiritual transformation. God tells to not be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewal of our minds. Such transformation allows us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1-2). Immediately following these introductory verses in the first chapter of Romans, Paul transitions to discuss the importance of believers exercising their gifts in community. Here Paul explains the need we all have for spiritual transformation and ties such transformation to our humble involvement within the community of believers.
In order to facilitate this process in our church, we are implementing transformation plans. These are plans which offer a formal way to make commitments about how we intend to practice certain spiritual disciplines. In so doing we recognize some important points:
1.
No one is transformed apart from the grace of God (1 Peter 1:13).
2.
We need transformed hearts and not simply transformed behaviour.
3.
A transformation plan in no way guarantees a transformed heart.
4.
A transformation plan, if one is not careful, might lead to legalism.
5.
One of the best ways to reach goals is to have a plan.
6.
A formal commitment offers an objective way for other believers to hold us responsible.
7.
A written plan offers the church elders specific ways to pray for a member’s growth in holiness.
Each member can develop a transformation plan to give to another member who will pray for them regularly and hold them accountable. Less detailed plans can also be given to the elders to be used to pray for members.
To the right is a link for the Transformation Plan Template. This is just an example so feel free to make adjustments as you deem appropriate. Pray that the Holy Spirit would use these in our lives as we seek to put on the character of Christ.
